Ammo Tracker vs Gun Inventory App: Do You Need Both?
Some apps are built to track your whole collection: firearms, magazines, accessories, and ammo. Others focus only on ammunition. Which is better depends on what you want to keep track of and how much detail you need.
What a gun inventory app does
Apps in this group, such as myArmsCache, track details about each firearm, like make, model, serial number, purchase date and price, and accessories. Many also track magazines and have some ammo features, such as subtracting rounds when you log a range trip. They're useful if you want a record of everything you own, for insurance or for your own reference.
What a dedicated ammo tracker does
An ammo tracker goes deeper on the ammunition itself. Ammo Box, for example, is built around:
- Adding boxes quickly by scanning the barcode
- Recording brand, caliber, bullet type, price, lot number, and storage location for each box
- Logging range sessions that subtract rounds from the right boxes
- Warning you when a caliber is running low
- Charts of what you shoot, when you shoot, and how your supply is trending
- Counting loose rounds from a photo with an AI feature
Ammo Box tracks ammunition only. It doesn't keep a record of your firearms.
How to decide
- **You want one app for everything you own.** A gun inventory app that also handles ammo is simpler, even if its ammo tools are lighter.
- **Ammo is what you actually run out of.** A dedicated tracker will give you more accurate counts and better insight into your usage.
- **You want your data to stay private.** Check where each app keeps your data. Ammo Box stores it on your device and needs no account.
- **You care about the serial numbers and values of your firearms.** Use an app built for that. An ammo tracker isn't the right place for it.
Using both
Some people use a gun inventory app for their firearms and a dedicated tracker for ammo, since the two jobs are quite different. Your ammo changes with every range trip, while your guns mostly stay the same.
Which is right for you?
If your main frustration is running short of ammo or losing track of what you have, start with a tracker built for ammo. If you mainly want a record of your collection, start with a gun inventory app. You can always add the other later.
